Skunk Identity

Skunk Description

Skunks are well known for their markings, and of course, their foul smell. There are a few species of skunks but the two most common and prominent are the spotted and the striped skunk.

Skunks usually have distinct black and white markings, and long claws for digging.

Striped skunks have two outward-bowing thick stripes along their backs that join together near their tails, and white patches on their heads. This skunk species weights between 4 and 10 pounds and measure about 25 inches long.

Spotted skunks have more varied and eccentric-looking stripes accompanied by a few actual spots. Spotted skunks are smaller and weigh no more than 3 pounds and grow between 15 and 20 inches long.

Skunks are mostly nocturnal and prefer to live in open areas like prairies, pastures and forest edges. Skunks adapt well and can survive in most climates.

Skunk Entry and Damage

Skunks are not known to enter homes and buildings necessarily. The nourishment that is available to skunks under homes will compel a skunk to your property. Skunk damages to yards will include holes from digging for food, and if they get scared – that nasty smell will consume your home and yard! Skunks can eat almost anything and will sometimes break into chicken coops to steal eggs or chicks.
